A Career in Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a comprehensive, holistic system of medicine established in the early 1800’s by German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Based on the Law of Similars, a concept put forth by philosophers predating him, Hahnemann sought a principle-based method of curing people safely, gently and effectively.

During his lifetime he discovered and developed a system of medicine unlike any other before or since, documenting his findings in six editions of the Organon, the primary textbook of Homeopathy. From the Greek “homoios” meaning similar and “patheia” meaning suffering, Homeopathy continues to be founded on this and other principles in discernment and treatment of acute and chronic disease.

Homeopathy has been a vital component of mainstream medicine in England, Europe, India and South America since its inception and is now one of the fastest-growing disciplines in alternative medicine in North America. It is a holistic view of health and disease, taking into account states of the body, mind and emotions, the mechanism of which is non-toxic medicines that stimulate the body’s innate capacity to heal itself. Homeopathy offers a way of understanding health and disease that is harmonious with the laws of nature, effecting change in the vital force of the individual with homeopathically potentized substances.

There has never been a better time to consider a career in homeopathy as the public seeks alternatives to mainstream medicine. Homeopathy is established worldwide as an efficacious and low-cost alternative to toxic drugs with side effects and dangerous interactions. Its effectiveness in both treating and preventing disease continues to drive public demand for it. Governing bodies in North America are beginning to recognise homeopaths as qualified health care practitioners.

If you feel a career in homeopathy might be for you, then you may be interested in knowing that our Calgary clinics currently have patient wait times around a week or longer due to heavy demand. There is an acute shortage of fully trained doctors of homeopathy with a solid portfolio of clinical experience.

The Western College of Homeopathic Medicine is specially designed to provide full-spectrum experience-based training to prospective homeopathic practitioners. We deliver an academic curriculum leading to a diploma in Classical Homeopathy (DCH). In addition, we contextualize academic study with intensive and engaging student clinical work. As a student you can expect to spend 1800 hours in clinical practicum observing treatment of clients with chronic complaints.

Student Clinic is a key component of this program of study.

Natural Science for the Homeopath
...for those who would like a refresher or need an upgrade...

The homeopath is both a scientist and physician in the practice of this 200-year-old healing art. From subatomic particles to cellular functions, organ systems and interactions with the mind, being a successful homeopath requires understanding of the human body in the context of the broader natural world. Our remedies are also prepared from plants, animals and minerals, of which we need similar understanding. This science review covers the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics required for study of the medical sciences.

Taught by Dr. Tevna Tayler, ND, students can expect this class to prepare them well for the medical science sections of WCHM's four-year program in classical homeopathy. Dr. Tayler is a fine educator with a talent for simplifying complex topics. The focus is on learning outcomes and integrating concepts meaningfully.

Homeopathy Is Gaining Popularity

In the spring of 2007, the Homeopathy Act was passed through the Ontario Legislature recognising and regulating the profession in the province of Ontario. The Western College of Homeopathic Medicine is undertaking pursuit of similar status for the profession in Alberta and is actively engaged in promoting awareness of homeopathy for the consumer.

From April to September 2007, a national survey was conducted on 1150 homeopathic patients by the American Medical College of Homeopathy Department of Research. This survey explored the demographics, education, success, satisfaction, barriers to treatment, obstacles to cure, side effects of treatment and treatment costs for homeopathic patients. We invite you to download a copy of the survey (PDF, 132K).
